The story of Brice & Joup

Once upon a time, in the small village of Hombourg, in 1591, there was a brotherhood called “Saint Brice”, which became a rifle club, “Société de Tir Saint Brice” in 1741. Its members enjoyed organizing festivals and other activities for their parish.

One day, in 1881, almost 300 years later, a priest caused trouble. During a procession, the members of “Saint-Brice” had the duty to carry the wooden Virgin but, invoking the heat, they deposited the statue in an embankment! The priest, very irritated by this incident, set in motion his plan to create a new brotherhood “Saint-Joseph” (Joup in “low German”, the local dialect). Thus began the rivalries that cut the village in two. The inhabitants thus became either green (Brice) or red (Joup). The colour of a farm gate showed whether the farmer belonged to one or the other society.

Today, both societies still exist, they organize events, and each has its own hall and band. If the marriage of a red and a green has not always been possible, we have nevertheless put them together on a glass, taking care to put them back-to-back so that they cannot quarrel anymore!

Nowadays, “a Brice” will drink a Joup beer if it tastes good to him and “a Joup” will drink a Brice beer if he prefers it...

The proof of a healthy rivalry!
